Diapers are definitely a money making commodity in the United States. Disposable diapers are the most commonly used. They are convenient and much easier to clean up after than cloth diapers. They come in a variety of sizes and some with cute designs. There are several brands of diapers who claim to be selling the best product on the market today.

Disposable diapers have not been around that long. They hit shelves in store in the 1940’s. They were designed to replace cloth diapers and the plastic coverings to cloth diapers. They were considered a luxury that only the wealthy used. In 1950, the disposable diapers got another change. The idea was to make them in various sizes so that they fit the baby more effectively. This greatly increased sales, but they were still not considered a product for middle class or lower to afford.

It was in the 1970’s that cloth diapers began disappearing altogether as the cost of disposable diapers became affordable for most everyone. The convenience they offered was well worth the price to most people. Diapers continued to improve as well. They became lighter weight yet more absorbent. They have even become more environmentally friendly.

Ironically, the 2000’s saw a swing back to cloth diapers. It was believed to be for environmental reasons. New and cute diaper pins began cropping up in stores. The material for the cloth diapers was very soft on the baby as well as easy to wash. Many alterations have been made to the cloth diaper of the early 1940’s. Some today are made of the softest materials, come in a variety of colors, and Velcro on the sides similar to the disposable diapers. Some even have three buttons on each side to secure them. As the baby grows, you simply move to the next button. This allows the cloth diapers to last from infancy to potty training. This is even more of a money saver. With most households owning a washing machine, it seemed like a sensible way to save money. For some babies who are allergic to the materials disposable diapers are made of, a cloth diaper is the only option.
